Jonas Wood: Jungle Rug
This limited-edition hand-spun wool, silk, and hemp rug is the third collaboration between Wood and BravinLee Programs. The lively design, which features monkeys and a lizard in a rainforest canopy, is based on a shower curtain from the artist’s childhood, and the same scene also appears in a large-scale painting, drawing, and etching. The image is distinguished by Wood’s graphic stylization of his surroundings, in which he playfully confounds viewers’ expectations of scale and perspective.
The background is 100% natural hemp while the motif is a mix of black wool and silk. Featuring more than a million knots, the rug is hand-knotted in Kathmandu by artisan weavers, and bears a GoodWeave label assuring that no child labor was involved in its making. Whereas most carpets are washed with toxic chemicals, BravinLee carpets are made with environmentally friendly dyes and washed with soap and water.
