Jonas Wood: Drawings 2003-2023
This book was published on the occasion of Jonas Wood: Drawings 2003–2023 at Karma in New York and Los Angeles. Assembling a hundred drawings spanning two decades in chronological order, it was the largest survey of the artist’s works on paper to date. All of Wood’s best-known subjects are represented, from intricate still lifes and interiors to images of ceramic vessels and houseplants, sporting arenas and basketballs. In his drawings, as in his paintings, Wood makes reference to art history and pop culture as well as to the people and places that figure in his personal life.
Fully illustrated with color reproductions of all exhibited works, the catalogue traces Wood’s development in the medium back to his years working alongside painter Laura Owens and sculptor Matt Johnson, demonstrating how drawings continue to function both as preparatory sketches for his paintings and collages, and as artworks in their own right. It features a conversation between Owens and the artist and an essay by curator Douglas Fogle, alongside installation photography of the New York presentation.
