Cahiers d’Art: Picasso in the Studio
This special issue of Cahiers d’Art, guest edited by Cécile Godefroy and Vérane Tasseau, is dedicated to Pablo Picasso and includes rare and previously unpublished color and black-and-white photographs of the artist in his studio along with numerous images of works, both finished and in progress, by photographers including Yves Manciet, Lee Miller, and Edward Quinn. Founded by Christian Zervos, Cahiers d’Art was published between 1926 and 1960 and relaunched in 2012, with only one or two issues released per year.
Picasso in the Studio is divided into seven chapters, each devoted to a particular technique—sculpture, drawing, ceramics, painting, tapestry, printmaking, and monumental sculpture. The chapters comprise a selection of archival photographs, an essay by a historian, and an interview with a contemporary artist. In addition to Godefroy and Tasseau, featured authors include Elizabeth Cowling, Ann Hindry, Brigitte Leal, and Marilyn McCully. Artists Miquel Barceló, George Condo, Sheila Hicks, William Kentridge, Jeff Koons, Robert Longo, and Tatiana Trouvé illuminate their relationship with the iconic pioneer by tracing links between their respective methodologies. Finally, the issue also reproduces several key articles on Picasso published during the artist’s lifetime, underscoring his close relationship with Zervos.
