Taryn Simon: Father Country I Do Love You
This artist’s book premieres a body of work by Taryn Simon that is her most expansive and personal to date and the subject of a major 2026–27 exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York. Nearly ten years in the making, Father Country I Do Love You brings together hundreds of photographs with text, video, and sculpture to trace the life of an unnamed federal agent. Intertwined throughout its forty-two chapters are accounts of victims, predators, survivors, and the mechanics of justice. In this labyrinth of stories, Simon uncovers the ripple effects of her protagonist’s actions and inactions, witnessing events great and small and collecting evidence for others to piece together.
The narrative is shadowed by the life of Simon’s own father, who worked throughout the world for the US government before his career manufacturing and selling arcade games. Simon never got a full account of his life, and when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, she realized she never would. But America, he always said, was the best story on earth, if you could find someone to tell it.
