Howard Hodgkin: Paintings (Deluxe Edition)
This limited-edition publication is one of sixty deluxe copies of the exhibition catalogue published on the occasion of Howard Hodgkin: Paintings at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York, in 1998. It features an original painted cover by the artist and is housed in the original paper-cover clamshell box. The exhibition was Hodgkin’s debut at the gallery and included thirteen new paintings in oil on wood completed between 1993 and 1998, all of which are reproduced here as sumptuous full-color plates. The poem “In Paris with You” by James Fenton and a passage from “The Alien Corn” by W. Somerset Maugham accompany the images.
The featured works see Hodgkin continue to explore emotional states via a sophisticated language of color and form, making reference to memories of his travels and his friends, among them the British architect Max Gordon. Combining joyful abstraction with hints at figurative imagery, Hodgkin’s compositions often extend onto their frames, suggesting a free exchange of affect between art and life.
