Calder by Matter
This collector’s edition contains a copy of Calder by Matter and a portfolio of six stamped and numbered gelatin silver prints by Herbert Matter inside a handmade aluminum box. Published by Cahiers d’Art in direct collaboration with the Calder Foundation and limited to 250 copies, each edition is signed on the colophon by both Alexander Matter, the son of the photographer, and Alexander S. C. Rower, the grandson of Alexander Calder and the book’s editor.
Calder by Matter offers a new perspective on Calder’s life and work, featuring original essays by Rower, Jed Perl, and John T. Hill, who also designed the volume, as well as over three hundred photographs by Matter—many previously unpublished—of the sculptor at work in his studios and at home in Roxbury, Connecticut. Taken from 1936 through 1950, the photographs chronicle key developments in Calder’s career through the vision of a friend and compatriot. The book also includes film stills from Matter’s 1950 documentary on Calder and an account of Matter’s design of catalogues and published features on the artist.
