Alexander Calder: Three Young Rats and Other Rhymes
This children’s book gathers together nursery rhymes from Mother Goose and other classic stories selected by James Johnson Sweeney, former director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, accompanied by eighty-five fanciful and pithy illustrations by Alexander Calder. Interpreting the poems and tales in his own idiosyncratic fashion, Calder’s wirelike drawings are humorous, but often have slightly ominous overtones. The book includes an introduction by Sweeney and a handwritten calling card of “Mr. & Mrs. James Johnson Sweeney.”
