Anselm Kiefer: Himmelspaläste / Heavenly Palaces
Signed by the artist, this book documents Anselm Kiefer’s Himmelspaläste (Heavenly Palaces), a cycle of twenty-six sculptures produced in 1989 and 1990 and installed at the historic brickworks in Höpfingen, Germany. Beginning several years prior, Kiefer occupied the building, using it as a workshop and transforming its spaces with installations. With the exception of one work, the Himmelspaläste sculptures are contained in vitrines and have titles that allude to Jewish mysticism and Greek mythology.
The bilingual (English/German) catalogue contains black-and-white and color photographs of the works in situ, an essay by Heiner Bastian, and an illustrated checklist. Bastian explores the origins of these sculptures, the significance of their materials, and symbolism within Kiefer’s oeuvre.
