Cy Twombly: Nine Discourses on Commodus
This vintage poster was produced in 1964, in conjunction with the exhibition Cy Twombly: Nine Discourses on Commodus at Leo Castelli Gallery, New York. It reproduces a characteristically loose and expressive scripted drawing by Twombly in red and graphite that provides the title, venue, and dates of the presentation. Twombly’s interest in Italian history deepened after his relocation to Rome in 1957, and in 1962 he began work on Nine Discourses on Commodus, a series of paintings inspired by the megalomania and assassination of Roman emperor Aurelius Commodus. The resulting works were exhibited at Castelli in 1964 but did not achieve wide appreciation until after Twombly had moved on to his Blackboard paintings later that decade.
