Cy Twombly
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Cy Twombly at Gagosian, Beverly Hills, and 980 Madison Avenue, New York. It focuses on Twombly’s painting, sculpture, and works on paper from the last decade of his life. Returning to painting at a large scale, the artist adopted a lush palette for these elegantly dynamic works, while the exhibited sculptures extend his concerns with gesture and materiality into three dimensions.
The fully illustrated catalogue features color plates and details of thirty-three works presented in the two exhibitions, as well as photography of the Beverly Hills installation. It also includes a conversation between Tacita Dean and Julie Mehretu, in which the artists draw upon their knowledge of Twombly’s work and their own experience as painters to elucidate his creative process.
