The Clip-On Method is a two-volume publication conceived, edited, and designed by Cady Noland and published in 2021. Operating as an artwork in its own right, The Clip-On Method offers an immersive survey of the artist’s work.

Structured as a nonlinear archive, the book combines extensive photographic documentation of Noland’s sculptures and installations with a wide-ranging selection of sociological, political, and historical texts alongside the artist’s own writings. This includes Noland’s 1989 essay titled “Towards a Metalanguage of Evil,” which holds particular resonance today.

The Clip-On Method presents a comprehensive visual record of Noland’s practice over the past four decades. It records her sustained analysis of the material and symbolic architecture of American culture while highlighting the recurring themes central to her practice with remarkable clarity: the mythology of American identity, systems of power and control, violence, celebrity, racism, media culture, and the psychological structures that underlie social behavior.
