Marcel Duchamp

This book was published on the occasion of Marcel Duchamp at Gagosian, 980 Madison at 76th Street, New York. Inaugurating the gallery’s new ground-floor space in the historic building, the exhibition brought a selection of works—including all the artist’s most iconic readymades—back to the location where these editions made their American debut in a 1965 show at Cordier & Ekstrom Gallery. Produced by Duchamp and Italian gallerist Arturo Schwarz, the editions subvert ideas of authorship and originality, introducing strategies of irony and recontextualization.

The catalogue contains plates and installation photographs of all exhibited works, along with quotations by and about the artist. Don Quaintance contributes the essay “Displaying Duchamp in New York, 1942–1966,” while Jeff Koons considers issues of desire, generosity, and influence in Duchamp’s work in a conversation with Alison McDonald. Also included is a 1965 profile of Duchamp first published in the New Yorker by Calvin Tomkins when the artist’s exhibition at Cordier & Ekstrom was on view.
