Paul McCartney: Rearview Mirror: Photographs, December 1963–February 1964
This poster featuring a detail from the photograph Self-portraits in a mirror at the Hotel George V, Paris, January 1964 (2025) was produced in 2025, in conjunction with Paul McCartney: Rearview Mirror: Photographs, December 1963–February 1964 at Gagosian, Beverly Hills. The exhibition featured thirty-six recently rediscovered photographs—including some previously unseen—from McCartney’s personal archive, presenting a snapshot of Beatlemania as it grew into a global phenomenon and embodying a poignant intersection of time, place, and personality.
The image reproduced on the poster belongs to a strip of three black-and-white “mirror selfies” that McCartney took with his 35mm Asahi Pentax camera during a rare quiet moment at the hotel where The Beatles stayed for the duration of their Paris residency from January 14 to February 4, 1964. The room’s low lighting contributes to the pensive atmosphere of the image, which was shot “blind,” with the camera’s viewfinder lowered beneath McCartney’s chin.
