These works embody the intensity of Bacon’s final period while reaffirming his link to the French capital, a city in which he maintained a studio between 1975 and 1987. Study from the Human Body presents a solitary, contorted figure against a brilliant, sunshine-yellow background, with a red arrow directing the viewer’s attention and emphasizing the subject’s entrapment. The yellow ground harks back to three paintings produced by Bacon in 1969, including a triptych of painter Lucian Freud, who was likewise celebrated for his raw, psychologically driven portraits.
