A Foreigner Called Picasso
This poster featuring Seated Harlequin (1901) by Pablo Picasso was produced in 2023, in conjunction with A Foreigner Called Picasso at Gagosian, West 21st Street, New York. Curated by Annie Cohen-Solal and Vérane Tasseau, the exhibition focused on the artist’s status as a permanent foreigner in France and spanned the entirety of his career in the country from 1900 through 1973.
Seated Harlequin, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, dates from the year following Picasso’s arrival in Paris. As an itinerant, performing outsider on society’s margins, the pensive figure of the harlequin served as an allegorical self-portrait for the artist. This painting features the first depiction of a subject that Picasso would return to throughout his oeuvre.
