Collection S. Guggenheim New York
This vintage poster featuring Pablo Picasso’s painting Mandolin and Guitar (1924) was produced in 1958, in conjunction with the exhibition Collection S. Guggenheim New York at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Featuring selections from Solomon R. Guggenheim’s collection, the exhibition provided Parisian audiences an opportunity to view key modernist works one year before the completion of the Guggenheim’s celebrated Frank Lloyd Wright–designed museum in New York.
Printed by Mourlot, Paris, in an edition of one thousand, the lithograph translates the vivid colors and interlocked shapes of Picasso’s expansive painting, which he made in Juan-les-Pins, on the French Riviera. Composed in a bold synthetic Cubist style, the work combines rounded, undulating shapes and textured patterns to create a still life of musical instruments on a table, before an open window or balcony.
