Richard Prince: Untitled (Tire Planter)
This planter, cast in the shape of a DIY “tire planter,” features a Hippie Drawing by Richard Prince of a crude, flat figure in relief, which is the logo for the cannabis line Katz + Dogg. The Hippie Drawings are the foundation of the High Times series of paintings.
An avid collector and perceptive chronicler of American subcultures, Prince first became familiar with the vernacular of the tire planter when he purchased a country house in upstate New York in the late 1990s. “After we moved up here,” he said, “I started to notice three things common to people’s yards: the basketball hoop, the above-ground pool, and the tire planter.”
