Jonas Wood: Sports Book
This book collects over thirty paintings and works on paper made by Jonas Wood between 2004 and 2008 and centering around sports, including portraits of baseball and basketball players along with sparring boxers. Using pictorial sources such as trading cards, publicity photos, and freeze frames of televised games, Wood abstracts his subjects with an intensification of color and a distortion of depicted space. An essay by Cecilia Alemani analyzes Wood as an artist who is also a sports fan and a conversation between Wood and professional basketball player Rip Hamilton considers Hamilton’s NBA career and his perspective on other sports.
