Fondation Beyeler Anniversary Exhibition—Special Guest Duane Hanson
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Jubiläumsausstellung—Special Guest Duane Hanson at Fondation Beyeler, Riehen/Basel. Celebrating the Beyeler’s twenty-fifth anniversary, the exhibition juxtaposed thirteen hyperrealist sculptures by Duane Hanson with masterworks from the museum's collection by artists such as Paul Cézanne, Marlene Dumas, Alberto Giacometti, Claude Monet, and Mark Rothko. Alongside exhibition views, photographs of the installation in progress, and archival images, an introduction by curator Raphaël Bouvier walks viewers through the correspondences and contrasts in the exhibition’s pairings, and an essay by novelist Rachel Cusk explores the “shocking” nature of Hanson’s uncanny representations. Bouvier and Gagosian’s Andisheh Avini speak with the artist’s children Maja Hanson and Duane Hanson Jr. about his processes and inspirations and what it was like to model for their father’s work.
