Rudolf Stingel: Vineyard Paintings
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Rudolf Stingel: Vineyard Paintings at Gagosian, Grosvenor Hill, London, the inaugural presentation of the artist’s 2024 series, Vineyard Paintings, made in his studio on the Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard. Returning to a method from earlier in his practice, Stingel made the paintings by spraying pigment through gauze fabric. The results recall the illusionistic qualities of old master painting and reveal an exchange between nature and abstraction. The layered textures and vibrant green-and-gold palette reflect not only the trees that surround Stingel’s remote studio, but also distant memories of the Alpine landscape of his youth. In addition to color plates of sixteen paintings, the catalogue includes an essay on the series by Thomas Demand, photographs of the works in the studio, and Polaroids by Stingel of the surrounding landscape.
