Jean-Michel Basquiat: Made on Market Street
This poster featuring Flexible (1984) was produced in 2024, in conjunction with Jean-Michel Basquiat: Made on Market Street at Gagosian, Beverly Hills, an exhibition curated by Fred Hoffman with Larry Gagosian. Flexible is one of the iconic paintings that Basquiat made in Venice, California, using slats removed from a fence around his studio courtyard. In this work, he expanded his portrayal of the Black male, presenting a larger-than-life figure whose elastic, expressive pose combines the artist’s interests in symbolism and in qualities he characterized as “royalty, heroism, and the streets.”
