Cy Twombly: Retrospective
Signed by the artist, this softcover catalogue was published to accompany Cy Twombly’s major retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1994. The comprehensive survey comprised nearly one hundred works, revealing the panoramic range of subjects and emotions addressed in his oeuvre. Redefining Twombly’s place as a singular master in postwar art, the exhibition also established the critical role his work has played in the international development of contemporary art.
The publication features copious photographic reproductions, including several details and foldouts, documenting the paintings, drawings, and sculptures made between 1946 and 1994 that were presented in the exhibition. It also includes “Inscriptions in Arcadia,” an in-depth and extensively annotated illustrated essay by Kurt Varnedoe, as well as a selected bibliography and list of exhibitions.
