Cy Twombly: Making Past Present
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Cy Twombly: Making Past Present, organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles. It explores the artist’s profound engagement with the ancient world which is everywhere present in his art. Taking on classical myths and heroes as personal guides, Twombly created a psychologically complex dialogue with the visual and literary arts of antiquity.
Making Past Present shows selected objects from Twombly’s own collection of Greek and Roman art for the first time outside the domestic environments so important to the artist’s practice, joined by other antiquities and interwoven with paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures, and photographs made after he settled permanently in Italy in 1959. The publication features more than 170 color reproductions alongside essays by Anne Carson, Jennifer R. Gross, Brooke Holmes, Mary Jacobus, Christine Kondoleon, and Kate Nesin.
