This poster was produced in 2022, in conjunction with Adam McEwen: Execute at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York. Hinging on the divergent meanings of its title—to carry out or act, on the one hand, and to extinguish or erase, on the other—the exhibition featured new paintings and a sculpture by the artist.
The image on this poster is drawn from a group of McEwen’s paintings that interpret the style of sketched line drawings, fusing a sense of earnest, playful spontaneity with mordant wit. Representing a cut tree sprouting new growth, the motif invokes themes of threat, escape, resilience, and execution.
