Hinging on the divergent meanings of its title—to carry out or act, on the one hand, and to extinguish or erase, on the other—the exhibition featured new paintings and a sculpture by the artist.
The poster depicts a ballpoint pen in a diagrammatic visual language that brings to mind the deceptive simplicity of early Roy Lichtenstein or the mechanical drawings appropriated by the Dadaists. Evoking language and expression, McEwen’s pens analogize human emotions and actions; they are in motion, taking in and expending energy, their ink levels revealing their potential lifespans.
