Takashi Murakami: Maiko in Springtime Kyoto
This screen print with gold leaf by Takashi Murakami depicts a woman in a blue kimono with a pink cherry blossom design standing in front of a checkerboard-patterned gold and bronze background embellished with additional smiling blooms. Behind the figure, a red torii gate and a pagoda usher viewers toward a spiritual world, while green hills inscribed with Japanese characters evoke the local landscape. The title suggests that the subject is a maiko, or apprentice geisha, and her poised stance and calm expression contribute to an atmosphere of tranquility and balance, while the flower motifs symbolize natural beauty and the ephemerality of life. The work’s interplay between vibrant coloration and graphic detail—and its accompanying evocations of manga and “cute” kawaii culture—contributes to its success as an homage to the cultural history of Japan and resonates with the themes of Murakami’s 2024–25 exhibition Japanese Art History à la Takashi Murakami at Gagosian, Grosvenor Hill, London.
