Jenny Saville: Gaze
This limited-edition print by Jenny Saville reproduces her oil portrait painting Gaze (2021–24). In her depictions of the human form, Saville transcends the boundaries of figuration and abstraction with layers of paint becoming as visceral as flesh itself. Gaze is dominated by its subject’s penetrating blue eyes and characterized by passages of color in broad brushstrokes, the fleshy impasto surfaces of which underscore the sitter’s humanity. Combining traditional portraiture with painterly exploration, Saville’s print achieves a heightened realism that reflects the influence of Rembrandt and Titian. The print was published by the Albertina, Vienna, on the occasion of Jenny Saville: Gaze, the artist’s first solo exhibition in Austria, which was held at the museum and featured the original painting, among works spanning the last twenty years.
