Stanley Whitney: Peace Be Still
This five-color lithograph by Stanley Whitney was created by the artist in celebration of Greenpeace’s fiftieth anniversary in 2021. Counter Editions has made the print available both individually as well as in a portfolio that includes works by Katherine Bernhardt, Billy Childish, Tracey Emin, Eddie Martinez, Cassi Namoda, Pater Saul, and Jonas Wood. Whitney’s print features one of his characteristic color abstractions, a loose grid of gestural patches arranged in three rows divided by a network of thick blue lines. Having defined a space within which to improvise, the artist establishes visual relationships between each area, its neighbors, and the composition as a whole, setting a unique group of chromatic and spatial harmonies in motion.
