Takashi Murakami: 108 Bonno Murakami.Flowers
This offset print reproduces 108 paintings on view in the exhibition Takashi Murakami: An Arrow through History at Gagosian, 980 and 976 Madison Avenue, New York, that were based on images from the artist’s Murakami.Flowers NFT project (2021–22). The NFT series comprises 11,664 unique images in total—an iterative combination of 108 different backgrounds and attributes. The number 108 is associated with the Buddhist principle of bonnō, or earthly temptations.
Combining Murakami’s influential Superflat aesthetic with the nostalgic graphic style of 1980s video games, the images depict pixelated flowers in various states, including “throbbing,” “shocked and dizzy,” or participating in activities such as drinking cola or playing baseball.
