Mark Grotjahn: Out of Country
This poster featuring Untitled (Backcountry 55.89) (2024) was produced in 2024, in conjunction with Mark Grotjahn: Out of Country at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York. The exhibition featured the concluding entries in the Backcountry series, for which Grotjahn drew inspiration from rural American landscapes, specifically those of his ski and fly-fishing tours in remote western Colorado. While the works have a figurative component, they are primarily abstract, revolving around a dynamic layering of line, tone, and texture, and an ongoing investigation of color, perspective, seriality, and the sublime. In these paintings, Grotjahn continues his use of strategies rooted in Abstract Expressionism and Minimalism, creating a direct, visceral relationship to form and conveying a sense of awe through a dialogue with the natural world.
