Jonas Wood Hong Kong Book Edition 1
This limited-edition publication is one of four special editions of the catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition Jonas Wood at Gagosian, Hong Kong. The ten new paintings and two sets of related drawings continue Wood’s exploration of motifs of fruits, flowers, and houseplants. Depicting brilliantly hued orchids and succulents, full bunches of bananas, and a robust monstera plant, Wood uses plants as a vehicle to experiment with color and geometry, isolating the forms on monochromatic backgrounds to investigate color theory, pattern, and line.
The bilingual (English/Chinese) catalogue includes reproductions of the exhibited works, images of the architectural model Wood used to plan the installation from his studio in Los Angeles (he was unable to visit Hong Kong in person due to COVID-related travel restrictions), and a floral wallpaper designed by the artist on the book’s endpapers.
This signed, numbered, and dated catalogue features a still-life image by Wood screenprinted onto the front cover. Also depicting fruits and plants, this bold graphic addition extends the themes of the exhibition onto the book’s exterior, transforming it into an artwork in its own right.
