Jean-Michel Basquiat: Untitled (Skull) Skateboard Decks
The Skateroom has collaborated with the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat to create this set of three skateboard decks featuring Basquiat’s painting Untitled (1982). This painting was first presented in the artist’s debut solo gallery exhibition in New York City at Annina Nosei Gallery in 1982.
With its listless eyes, which contrast with the bold colors and energetic lines, this skull seems to exist somewhere between life and death. Basquiat both alludes to the modernist appropriation of African masks and employs the mask as a means of exploring identity.
The decks are intended for decorative purposes, but can be assembled into functioning skateboards. One wall mount per deck is provided to hang the edition on the wall.
