Jean-Michel Basquiat: Untitled (Angel) Skateboard Decks
The Skateroom has collaborated with the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat to create this set of three skateboard decks featuring Basquiat’s painting Untitled (Angel) (1982).
Untitled (Angel) is one of several paintings by Basquiat to depict an angel, here outlined in black spray paint and white oil stick against a field of blue and black. As in many other of his paintings from the early 1980s, the artist positions this subject—historically a Judeo-Christian icon—as a tool for dissecting his own experience as a Black man in America. The vigorous application, lively coloration, and bold tonal contrasts of Untitled (Angel) also encapsulate the radical fusion of street graffiti and expressionist easel painting that made Basquiat a household name.
The decks are intended for decorative purposes, but can be assembled into functioning skateboards. One wall mount per deck is provided to hang the edition on the wall.
