Jean-Michel Basquiat: Glenn Plate
Produced by Ligne Blanche in Paris in collaboration with the Estate of Jean-Michel Basquiat, this Limoges porcelain plate features a detail from Basquiat’s collage painting Glenn (1984), the title of which likely refers to arts writer and editor Glenn O’Brien. Basquiat’s portrait of O’Brien recalls a large African mask and sits atop a collage of drawn cars, heads, and internal organs. Gestural streaks emerging from the mask’s mouth perhaps signify one of Basquiat’s great loves—the raw, improvisational energy of jazz.
