This T-shirt was produced on the occasion of Derrick Adams: RECESS at Gagosian, Burlington Arcade, London. Embodying the themes of Black joy, play, and leisure that are at the center of Adams’s practice, the presentation included new works and an installation of the artist’s interactive sculptures Funtime Unicorn Spring Riders (2022). The shirt references the Beauty World paintings (2019–), which are inspired by the wigged mannequin heads Adams has encountered in New York shop windows. The head in this image is depicted with long hair and framed by an oval vanity mirror, symbolizing the transformative power of personal style.
