This relaxed fit organic cotton T-shirt was produced by the Parisian brand Études Studio in collaboration with The Kitchen—one of New York’s oldest nonprofit alternative arts centers—as part of a special capsule collection. The front is screenprinted with profile images of Shigeko Kubota, Mary Lucier, Cecelia Sandoval, and Charlotte Warren, who formed the coalition Red, White, Yellow, and Black in 1971. The group—who chose a name that deliberately reflected the cultural identities of each member—staged three multimedia concerts at The Kitchen in 1972–73 and these headshots were used on a promotional poster for the 1972 performance. A small “É” is embroidered on the bottom left front of the shirt.

The variety of artists represented in the capsule collection reflects the collaborative spirit of Études Studio and the multidisciplinary nature of The Kitchen. With a predominantly black and white palette, enhanced by touches of yellow, the collection features archival images from the institution’s long history. A portion of the proceeds from sales will support artistic innovation at The Kitchen.
