Cy Twombly: Fifty Years of Works on Paper
This book was published on the occasion of Cy Twombly: Fifty Years of Works on Paper, a traveling exhibition that originated at the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia, and subsequently traveled to the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. The featured drawings, collages, and paintings on paper date from 1953 to 2002 and were selected in direct collaboration with the artist to mark his seventy-fifth birthday. Together, they survey the uncompromising expressiveness, innovation, and experimentation that defined Twombly’s oeuvre.
Featuring eighty-five color illustrations, the publication captures the variety of works that the exhibition chronicled. It includes a foreword by Adam Weinberg and an introduction by curator Julie Sylvester, along with biographical notes, an exhibition history, and a list of monographs on the artist. A new essay by historian Simon Schama offers insights into the evolution of Twombly’s protean approach to works on paper, and a reprint of Roland Barthes’s defined essay “Non Multa Sed Multum” describes Twombly’s use of gesture and allusions to writing.
