Takashi Murakami created CLONE X × Takashi Murakami #1 Murakami Arhat as an offset print based on an acrylic-on-canvas painting of the same name from 2022. The work depicts an avatar of the artist as an arhat, or one who has gained insight into the true nature of existence and achieved spiritual enlightenment in Buddhism. A physical manifestation of art created for the metaverse, the painting translates the digitally modeled Clone X NFT on which it is based into a meticulously detailed, hand-painted portrait. The Clone X NFT initiative was developed in collaboration with RTFKT Studios in 2021.
