Zao Wou-Ki: Pierre de feu Plate
Throughout his career, Zao Wou-Ki merged Eastern and Western aesthetic traditions in his work, retaining technical elements of Chinese painting styles while embracing European modernism. Inspired by Paul Klee and his appreciation of Eastern art, Zao began to seriously contemplate nature in his own work, and to incorporate traditional Chinese calligraphy into his evolving artistic language.
In 2005 Zao took several trips to Limoges, France, to work with the Bernardaud atelier to create these three limited-edition porcelain plates—Pierre de Feu, Pierre de Sable, and Pierre de Ciel. Each features a unique watercolor drawing transposed onto the plate.
