Takashi Murakami: SUPERFLAT Monogram (Lemon)
Part of a series of works produced by Takashi Murakami in collaboration with Louis Vuitton, this limited-edition screen print blends high art with commercial design by appropriating the luxury fashion house’s iconic logo. Representing its well-known monogram print and floral motifs in a bright color palette on a white ground, Murakami furthers his interest in reinterpreting contemporary iconography according to a range of Eastern and Western aesthetic influences. The title refers to his Superflat theory, which addresses the “flatness” of Japanese visual culture from traditional painting to contemporary animation in the context of World War II and its aftermath. Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton’s former creative director, described the project as a “monumental marriage of art and commerce.”
