Sterling Ruby: VIVIDS
This poster featuring SP288 (2014) was produced in 2014, in conjunction with Sterling Ruby: VIVIDS at Gagosian, Hong Kong, the artist’s first exhibition with the gallery. Ruby designed the poster, inscribing the exhibition information in block lettering over the fluorescent pink spray painting from the VIVIDS suite. In these atmospheric works the artist improvises on Los Angeles skies, merging indeterminate forms with ethereal backgrounds as the horizon seems to shift, asserting its presence beyond the picture plane. Ruby engages with a wide range of strategies and mediums in his practice, producing paintings, sculptures, drawings, collages, ceramics, and videos that incorporate elements of autobiography and art historical references, exploring violence, graffiti, societal pressures, and the urban environment.
