Sterling Ruby: TURBINES

The illustrated work, a painting in acrylic, oil, and cardboard on canvas, belongs to the TURBINE series that Ruby began in 2021. The new series incorporates the same materials that characterize his WIDW (2016–22) paintings but abandons the earlier works’ stark vertical divisions in favor of energetic diagonals. In TURBINE. DUTCH WIP. and its companion works, Ruby combines cardboard fragments with smudged and feathered paint, using formal relationships as allegories for social and ideological conflicts in the manner of the Futurists and Russian Constructivists.
