Roy Lichtenstein: Vicki!
This poster was produced on the occasion of Roy Lichtenstein’s 1968 exhibition at Kestner-Gesellschaft, Hannover, Germany. The artist’s first solo exhibition in Europe, the retrospective was organized by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and traveled to London and Bern before opening in Hannover. The poster reproduces the painting Vicki! I--I Thought I Heard Your Voice! (1964) above a speech balloon containing the exhibition details. Vicki!, which was produced in enamel on steel in an edition of eight, was a defining work for Lichtenstein. Inspired by romance comics, it presents a melodramatic moment in an implied narrative, with the enigmatic expression of the female figure framed by the back of the head, hand, and exclamatory words of its male character.
