Jasper Johns: Between the Clock and the Bed
This poster featuring Corpse and Mirror (1974) was produced in 2026, in conjunction with Jasper Johns: Between the Clock and the Bed at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York. On loan from the private collection of David Geffen, the painting is an important early example of the crosshatch works that dominated the artist’s practice for a decade and have reverberated across his subsequent production. The title of this two-panel oil, encaustic, and collage work references the Surrealist cadavre exquis (exquisite corpse) method of making collaborative drawings or texts on folded strips of paper. In the painting, Johns arrayed interlocking configurations of parallel lines into three sections on the left side, then interpreted the composition in mirrored form on the right.
