James Turrell
This catalogue raisonné—which is long out of print—was published on the occasion of James Turrell’s 2004–05 exhibition at the Institut València d’Art Modern in Valencia, Spain. Since the 1960s, the Arizona-based artist has been exploring perceptual phenomena ranging from sensory deprivation to optical effects. In 1966, he began employing planes of light in relation to architectural structures, and he continues to use light as his primary subject and material in simple but meditative projects that apply new technology to examine the limits of perception.
The book provides the most comprehensive and detailed survey available of Turrell’s body of work from 1967 to 2004, beginning with his early studio days in California and including extensive documentation of his monumental work-in-progress, Roden Crater. It features 510 illustrations in color and 365 in black-and-white, and contains biographical texts in English, Spanish, and Valencian by writers including Ana María Torres, Kosme de Barañano, Javier Seguí, and Denis G. Pelli; a text by Turrell; and a foreword by Consuelo Císcar.
