Murakami—Ego
This book was published on the occasion of Murakami—Ego at Qatar Museums Gallery–Al Riwaq, Doha, the first exhibition of the artist’s work in the Middle East. Conceived and overseen by Murakami himself, it presented a comprehensive self-portrait of the artist as a critic of pop culture, reflecting the global network of conceptual, material, and visual consumption and exchange in which he is immersed.
Enlivened by numerous details and installation photographs, Murakami—Ego reproduces entries from some of the artist’s most celebrated series, including Kaikai Kiki and Pom & Me. The exhibition it documents was conceptualized as a work of art in its own right, distinguished by new modes of display such as sculptural pedestals incorporating digital animations and a circus tent that doubles as an indoor cinema—innovations that are also reflected in the book.
The publication features a foreword by Sheikha Al Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, an interview with Murakami by exhibition curator Massimiliano Gioni, an essay by curator Gary Carrion-Murayari, and a poem by Fahad Al-Mursel. Murakami himself has also contributed texts on the genesis and development of various works and series.
