Roy Lichtenstein: Still Lifes
This poster featuring Cape Cod Still Life II (1973) was produced in 2010, in conjunction with Roy Lichtenstein: Still Lifes at Gagosian, 555 West 24th Street, New York. The exhibition was the first devoted solely to the artist’s still-life paintings, sculptures, and drawings, which were made between 1972 and the early 1980s. These works, which constitute an updated contribution to the familiar historical genre, are characterized by their vivid color, flat shapes, and hand-painted Benday dots inspired by print advertisements. Exploring a variety of motifs and themes—in this instance, a maritime arrangement—they often quote art historical styles as well as Lichtenstein’s own previous works, and deliberately strip both subjects and movements of their original gravitas.
