Roy Lichtenstein: CRAK!
This poster was produced on the occasion of Roy Lichtenstein’s 1963 exhibition at Leo Castelli Gallery in New York, the artist’s second solo show at the gallery. It reproduces his lithograph Crak! (1963), which employs onomatopoetic graphic text and uses the artist’s Benday dots to define the figure’s face and the space around her. Lichtenstein sourced the image of a beret-wearing woman firing a rifle from a 1962 issue of the comic book Star Spangled War Stories, which featured the recurring character Mademoiselle Marie, a farm girl who joined the French resistance during World War II.
