Roy Lichtenstein: As I Opened Fire
Published in 1966 by the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, this triptych of offset lithographs reproduces one of Roy Lichtenstein’s most famous multipart paintings, As I Opened Fire (1964). Its three images appropriate the panels of a sequence from a 1962 volume of the comic book All American Men of War, enlarging them and modifying the compositions to emphasize their primary colors and black contours. The dynamic arrangement of successively cropped views of machine guns is unified by the hand-lettered “BRAT!” and “BRATATATATA!” and by captions that relay a narrative of aerial combat. Lichtenstein was fascinated by the contrast between this violent subject and the formulaic style used to illustrate it.
