This poster was produced to promote an exhibition of work by Michael Heizer at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, Germany, in 1979, which traveled to the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands, that same year. It features a brilliant color photograph of a structure from Heizer’s mammoth outdoor installation City (1970–2022), which was then—and until its opening to visitors in 2022—a work in progress. Sited in a remote area of the Nevada Desert, City features monumental forms made of sand, cement, and other materials, and is intended to suggest a prehistoric settlement.
